The earnings from the sales of clothing and accessories during winter sales in Spain was €3,400 million, down €200 million or 0.6 percent compared to previous years sales figures of €3,600 million.
The sales of garments and accessories have declined by 24 percent since the start of the financial crisis in Spain, according to the Business Association of Textile Trade & Accessories (Acotex).
The winter sales season started on a weak note owing to high temperatures. Subsequently, however, the sales improved as the season progressed. The cold weather in February too spurred sales.
Still, the sector performed little lower than its expected sales of €3,600 million during the season.
The discount offers are now not limited to a particular season and are available in all retail outlets throughout the year. This is causing changes in pattern of shopping and is also diluting the effect of the discount sales.
