Bangladesh has been able to sustain its growth levels in exports of readymade garments to Germany, its largest export destination in the EU region, despite the Eurozone debt crisis.

As per the Bangladesh German Chamber of Commerce and Industry statistics, during the initial eight months of the current fiscal, Bangladesh exported US$ 2.48 billion worth of garments to Germany, which is 24 percent higher than exports of US$ 2 billion achieved during the corresponding period of last fiscal.

Knitwear exports, representing a 55 percent of overall Bangladeshi clothing item exports to Germany, grew by 15 percent year-on-year to US$ 1.4 billion during the July-February period, while woven garment exports, representing a 37 percent, share grew by 45 percent y-o-y to US$ 1 billion.

Garment exports account for over 90 percent of all Bangladesh's export earnings. Germany is the second biggest importer of Bangladeshi apparels after the US.

With a steady apparel export growth for over last 10 years, Bangladesh is currently the third biggest apparel supplier to Germany, after China and Turkey.

The Netherlands, Italy, Poland, India, Denmark and France are other major suppliers of clothing items to Germany.
