Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sought duty-free access for Bangladeshi readymade garments (RMG) in the US market.
Speaking at a meeting on 'Prospects of trade and investment cooperation between Bangladesh and the US', the Prime Minister urged the 'Friend Congressmen' to play a pro-active role in helping Bangladesh acquire zero-duty access to the US market for its apparels.
She said the waiver of existing high duty on Bangladeshi textiles and clothing items can contribute to the Asian country's economic growth and social transformation.
Moreover, it would contribute to women empowerment and would also aid sustenance of democratic ideals and shared values, which form the basis for relations between the two nations, she added.
Ms. Hasina said Bangladesh has several supporters in the US Congress, and to further improve bilateral ties between the two nations, she sought their proactive support to gain duty-free access for Bangladeshi RMG goods to the US.
Vice President of US Chamber Tami Overby, President of Asia Society Bishakha Desai and former President of World Bank James Wolfenson were among the dignitaries who spoke at the meeting organized by US Chamber of Commerce and Asia Society.
