Weavers in Andhra Pradesh have urged the state government and the Warangal district administration to immediately begin work on the proposed apparel park to be set up in Warangal.

V Sriramulu, President of National Weavers' Association and former Director of AP State Handloom Weavers' Co-operative Society Ltd (APCO), said a 30-acre site in old Azam Zahi Mills was allotted in 2003 for setting up an apparel park.

He informed that subsequently another 100-acre site at Industrial Development Authority in Rampur was allotted in 2008-09 for setting up a textile park.

However, he said, the work is yet to begin at both these places.

He revealed that there are about 600 powerlooms in Desaipet, Kareemabad and Kottawada areas of Warangal city, in addition to 400 powerlooms in Kodakandla mandal, 100 in Shyampet and about 40 in Wardhanapet.

Mr. Sriramulu urged the state government, and especially the district administration, to shed its apathy and speed up work towards establishment of the proposed apparel and textile parks so as to benefit weavers, who use traditional powerlooms run with small capacity motors.
