Mr. Tony Ehrenreich, Provincial Secretary, The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has informed that the COSATU ispleased to hear about the turnaround in the fortunes of the clothing industry in the Western Cape.
We want to thank National Government for the measures that they have implemented to facilitate this turnaround. The agreement on restricting imports from China as well as the funding Government has made available for investment in new machinery has been a boost for this sector.
This is government as a developmental state playing a positive role in expanding the industrial base of South Africa. We need the Western Cape Government to also play a part in supporting this sector so that more jobs can be created.
The lack of support from the Western Cape Government has restricted the extent of the jobs that could be created.
Should the Western Cape Government not support the measures to defend and expand clothing jobs, we will be forced to strike against the DA to support the National Government programme.
This is a great initiative from National Government and we call on the Province to follow suit.
