Clothing units fail to improve compliance levels - SACTWU

Clothing employers have failed to meet their commitments to improve compliance in the clothing industry, a Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers Union (SACTWU) review analysis on the status of implementation of last year's clothing industry wage agreement shows.

In terms of the agreement, SACTWU has agreed to a 30% lower entry wage for new employees. The union has honoured this commitment. In return, employers have agreed to increase the number of bargaining council registered compliant employees by 3%, as at the end of February this year, compared to 1 June last year.

This employer commitment has failed to materialise. Latest available clothing industry employment statistics show that employers have not met their committed targets, recording only a 1% increase.

The trade union is deeply concerned about this employer failure. We intend tabling our concerns at the next round of clothing industry wage negotiations next week. A copy of the wage agreement is available on the SACTWU website. The relevant clause is clause 4.
