Apparel manufacturing units in Kyrgyzstan produced 39.3 percent lesser goods, quantity-wise, during the first five months of the current year, compared to those manufactured during the same period last year, Fatima Sadamkulova, Head of the Department of Light Industry of the Ministry of Energy and Industry, said.

Valule-wise, production dipped by 419.1 million soum to 1.948 billion soum during January-May 2012 period, compared to production worth 2.367 billion soum made during the corresponding period of last year.

Ms. Sadamkulova attributed the fall in garment production to formation of the Customs Union, which made the formalities with regards to execution of documents on border for inspection and transportation of goods more stringent.

Revealing that 95 percent of the garments produced in the country are either exported to Russia and Kazakhstan or consumed by the domestic market, she said any difficulties with regards to exports directly impacts production.

However, as informed by the representatives of the apparel units, the difficulties that they faced at the start of the year have eased now, Ms. Sadamkulova added.

She noted that in spite of a dip in production, apparel exports for first four months of the current year jumped by 11.7 percent to US$ 44 million from US$ 39.4 million posted during the corresponding period of last year.

Exports remained unaffected in spite of production cut due to the carryover of stocks. The goods produced during the later part of 2011 were also sold by apparel producers during the current year.

There are 700 apparel producing units in Kyrgyzstan, and clothing products account for 4.5 percent share in the country’s GDP.
