Apparel retailers in Ireland are being called on to become signatories to new voluntary guidelines on the design and marketing of children’s clothing.

The guidelines have been issued with an intention to ensure that modesty and fun remain a key element of children’s clothing.

The guidelines were issued after receiving criticism over sale of mini-skirts, padded bras and tops with plunging necklines by some retailers.

Retail Ireland hailed the guidelines, and stated that apparel producers are duty-bound to protect childhood and look after the interest of children.

Till now, 10 leading retailers including Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Debenhams, House of Fraser, Brown Thomas, TK Maxx, Penneys and Arnotts have signed the code.

Retail Ireland is a representative body of the entire retail sector of Ireland, including Irish and international departmental stores, fashion and footwear, DIY, supermarkets and specialist stores
