New technology to save Tirupur knitwear industry

To save the domestic knitwear industry from waning further, textile units in Tirupur, a city in the south-Indian state of Tamil Nadu, have decided to reduce emission of pollutants during dyeing through adoption of a new technology.
 
Speaking at a conference organized by the National Institute of Fashion Technology - Tirupur Exporters’ Association (NIFT-TEA), in association with the Green Textile movement, Mr. Raja Shanmugam, Chairman NIFT-TEA, said the technology would prove to be highly useful in boosting the knitwear industry.
 
Under the existing dyeing process, the use of mechanical evaporator necessitates burning of a lot of firewood to support physical evaporation of water, but under the new technology water is not evaporated by any external forces.
 
In the new technique, water is poured from the top, and is made to pass through a filter prepared from some unwanted firewood. As the process supports automatic evaporation of water, there is no contamination and it does not require the use of firewood, Mr. Shanmugam said.
 
Earlier, some of the dyeing units emitted the untreated liquid effluents directly into the rivers. However, following the Supreme Court of India’s orders to close down all the dyeing units that fail to adhere to the zero-discharge norms, Tirupur’s knitwear industry has decided to adapt to the new technology, Mr. Shanmugam noted.
 
He stated that the new technology would prove to be very much economical and considerably bring down the cost of production.
 
High cost involved in evaporating the main solution, emitted during the output of the process, was the main barrier in achieving the zero-liquid discharge, and several enterprises preferred to breach laws to cut costs.
 
However, inception of the new technology would mitigate all cost related concerns, Mr. Shanmugam said. 
 
Over 80 percent of India’s knitwear garment exports are from Tirupur.
