The Trade Agreement recently held between the Government of India and Government of Bangladesh during the visit of Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to Bangladesh allowing duty-free entry of readymade garments has a lasting deleterious consequences. The industry has now exposed to uneven competition.

Though the Agreement was signed only in the previous year, statistics regarding import has yet to come up. The Bangladesh counterpart has solid base support by foreign buyers on buy back system and has been exporting to overseas countries for a considerable period. Their factories are working Three shift basis whereas no factory in West Bengal can afford to work even Two shift basis. Besides liberal support by the Government of Bangladesh, the cost of labour is much lower in Bangladesh.

In order to promote the indigenous industry in a systematic manner, the readymade garment industry direly needs a cluster for future development. Our Association is more than willing to develop a Garment Cluster in PPP mode. The Association urges upon the State Government to take initiative in this regard.
