Outshining knitwear items, woven garments have grabbed the crown of being Bangladesh’s top export-earner during the just concluded fiscal year.

According to the Export Promotion Bureau data, the woven garment sub-sector earned US$ 9.6 billion in revenues during last fiscal, showing a year-on-year rise of 14 percent.

Since 2008, knitwear was Bangladesh’s top export earning item, however, it hardly managed to tap a 0.05 year-on-year export growth during last fiscal.

During 2010-11, while the knitwear sub-sector earned US$ 9.48 billion, woven garment sub-sector earned US$ 8.43 billion.

According to experts, the surge in Bangladesh’s woven garment exports during last fiscal is mainly attributable to introduction of the revised rules of origin (RoO) by European Union since January 2011.

The revised RoO allows clothing exporters to duty-free export their goods to the 27 EU nations, the world’s biggest apparel market, even if the garments are produced using imported fabrics and raw-materials.

Previously, garment makers had to source their fabric requirements from Bangladeshi textile mills to avail the zero-duty benefit in the EU.

In fiscal 2011-12, woven and knitwear garment segments together fetched US$ 19.10 billion to the country’s exchequer.
