Shane and Kay, the founders of Burg & Schild Berlin asked Edwin Europe to collaborate on their Fifth Year Anniversary ‘BLACK COLLECTION’. As a selected supplier to Burg & Schild, naturally, this was a project I felt passionate about in that we where able to explore a more hand rendered approach to the creation of a limited number of jeans, exclusively made for this special occasion.

Rey Gautier of Edwin says “We are proud to be working with Burg & Schild on this project, simply because we love what this store represents. A true independent, with the balls to provide solid men’s style within a market evermore evolving towards transient consumable trends. It provides a perfect platform for our core product, premium five-pocket denim.”

Edwin works within Burg & Schild, and we are proud to be represented in there. It is one of the stores, I personally have great pleasure in visiting as the product mix is perfect for me, it is about good quality clothing, built by specialist in their respective fields, equally, the approach to their customers is personal and unique. This sets them apart.

The idea was to work on a block, which works for them and their consumer. A five-pocket denim style we developed in Europe using 14oz Black/Black Red Listed Selvage denim from the famous Japanese mill, Kaihara.

The devil is in the details as they say, which is exactly how this has been executed. The pocket bags are black twill, internally printed and hand numbered. Fifty pieces, 10 for each year we have been working with this fantastic store.

The donut buttons, made from copper metal are hand painted with black enamel, which will chip over time allowing the original copper colour to show through, which will be the only externally visible colouration.

Internal hidden back pocket rivets, strengthening this stress point, however leaving a clean aesthetic keeping in line with the black tonal stitching throughout, including a single stitch arcuate on the back pockets. The leather patch has been hand cut and hand embossed using vegetable tan dyed leather.

A hand made tote bag has been made from recycled military ground sheets, in ode to Edwin’s inception dating back to 1947, when Edwin was a military surplus store situated in Nippori, Tokyo, selling ex US military garments left over from the occupying forces.
