Kohl's starts largest solar project at distribution center

-Programming and layout developed around a pre-existing structure. Kohl’s embraced elements such as the existing multi-level office design. More than 99 percent of the structural elements of the existing building were maintained and incorporated into the new design.

Exterior

-Use of a white membrane roofing material to reduce the building’s energy demand and minimize its heat island impact.

-Minimized parking lot size to reduce runoff and the amount of asphalt used. There is also parking allocated for carpools.

-Use of native and adaptive plants for landscaping.

-Reduced light pollution through use of cut-off exterior lighting fixtures to direct the light only where required while still maintaining safe lighting levels in the parking lot.

Interior

-Interior finish construction materials that contained no or low volatile organic compounds.

-Low-flow interior plumbing fixtures throughout the facility, resulting in more than 35 percent less water use over standard fixtures.

-High-efficiency lighting, advanced air conditioning and heating systems and an integrated control system to monitor space conditions help make the energy use in this building 46 percent more efficient than a building designed to baseline energy codes.
