The Government of Bangladesh has taken steps for resumption of construction work by next month for the upcoming ‘garment village’ in Munshiganj, according to a Financial Express report.

The Government envisages relocation of about 1,000 apparel units to the garment village by January 2014.

In the wake of the recent Tazreen Fashions fire incident, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed her desire to see all garment units in the county to be fully compliant with safety standards.

Hence, the Prime Minister has also directed setting up of garment villages in Savar, Chittagong and Gazipur in phases, in addition to the one being set up at Munshiganj.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufactures and Exporters Association (BKMEA) have agreed to submit a detailed proposal on the ‘garment village’ this month.

The reports would help Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) to resume construction work at the proposed garment village.

The proposed garment industrial park will have 976 plots with infrastructural facilities, utility services, medical facilities, CETPs, day care centres, roads, drainage facilities, waste-dumping yard, firefighting equipment, banks, insurance offices and IT parks, according to Financial Express.
