Vietnam leads global textile & apparel export growth

Vietnam has achieved a 32 percent rise in textile and apparel exports during 2005-11, which is the highest in the sector for any country, a recent survey shows.

This information was revealed by Dhyana Van der Pols, a consultant with the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI) functioning under the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while speaking at a conference titled "Competitiveness of Vietnam's Textile Industry: Perspectives in the Eyes of International Experts”.

According to Ms. Pols, the Vietnamese sector’s triumphant export growth is mainly because of the political stability and cheap labour availability in the country.

Next to Vietnam, China posted second highest export growth of 15 percent, while India, Malaysia, Thailand and Turkey stood third with an individual growth of around 7 percent.

Ms. Pols said presently though Vietnam does not position itself amongst top 10 textile and garment exporters to the EU, the world’s biggest apparel consumer, it is likely to earn enhanced access to the EU market if a proposed free-trade agreement (FTA) between the two parties materializes.

The conference was jointly organized in the HCM City by CBI and Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex).

The exports of garments and textiles from Vietnam have reached US$ 4.2 billion during the first quarter of the current year, registering a year-on-year rise of 16 percent, according to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS).
