Shapwear turns popular with brides, says Debenhams

The retailer has released sales data that shows for the first time brides are turning their backs on pretty lace lingerie and plumping for control wear figure tucking pants. So large is the demand that figures from Debenhams show that Spanx out sell bridal lingerie six to one.

The shift in lingerie habits according to the retailer is due to the fact that brides now worry more about what their guests think about their figure than their new husband.

Says Sharon Webb, head of lingerie buying and design at Debenhams: “Historically, traditional bridal lingerie was more popular than control underwear but with photos being taken left, right and centre the bride needs to look her best at every angle, shapewear will help with this so the bride just needs to remember to smile.”

“Every woman deserves to feel beautiful and confident on their big day so there is no shame in wearing problem-solving pants, waist nippers and body shapers as they can help enhance your favourite features or hide any lumps and bumps that you want to disguise.

“Control lingerie is also much more fashionable and comfortable now than when your Granny was getting married.” Previously a red carpet secret, Spanx are now proudly worn by Hollywood A-listers such as Kim Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sienna Miller, Jessica Alba, Beyonce, and even small waisted Rochelle from the Saturdays admitted to wearing them under her wedding dress last year.

Says Debenhams Personal Shopper Alain Mehada: “When it comes to bridal fashion, every bride wants to look her best, after all, it is her big day and she will be in the spotlight. So, what a woman chooses to wear under her dress is a crucial component that can boost her confidence and sharpen the overall look.

“We were shocked to see more and more bride-to-be’s with Spanx in their basket rather than traditional bridal lingerie but it’s actually quite refreshing and completely understandable, they are the ultimate guilt free garment to perfect your figure.

“Come your wedding night, you'll look so seductive that the groom will be happy to have and love to hold.”At Debenhams you can find all your bridal lingerie essentials such as bras, basques, briefs, garters, suspenders, breast enhancers and of course, shapewear.

This luxe range features light-as-air slips, shapers with lace, slimming tops and more. Each Red Hot piece delivers the fit, innovation and premium quality that we have come to know and love from Spanx, the shapewear experts.
