Garment exports from Myanmar to the US are all set to resume next month, according to the Myanmar Garment Entrepreneurs Association (MGEA).

Some of the Myanmar-based garment factories will begin exporting to the US in June this year, while several others are gearing up to export apparels to the North American country in the subsequent months, MGEA Secretary Khine Khine Nwe said.

She said the US buyers are showing greater interest in Myanmar’s garments, after the recent visit of
President Thein Sein to the US, Eleven Myanmar reported.

At present, Japan and South Korea are the key garment export destinations for Myanmar, and last year, the country’s garment exports reached historic high of US$ 1 billion, Ms. Nwe added.

In view of all the positive developments, Ms. Nwe said her association is now training garment workers, so as to enable them to cater to the rising demand for garments from domestic as well as overseas markets.

Moreover, considering the huge growth potential and employment generation capacity of the Myanmar garment industry, the European Union has also assured its full support for developing the country’s garment industry.
