As the negotiations aimed at concluding a free trade agreement (FTA) move forward, Paraguay is expecting a boost in its apparel trade with Mexico.

Delegations from Paraguay and Mexico concluded their two-day talks aimed at arriving at an economic cooperation accord, in the framework of the Associação Latino-Americana de Integração (ALADI or Latin American Integration Association), which could lead to a full free trade treaty in future, according to a brief release of the Paraguayan Ministry of Foreign Relations.

The release said both sides discussed the lists of products of common interests that are to be included in the economic cooperation accord.

Officials from both countries, during their April 11-12, 2013 meeting decided to hold three rounds of negotiations in June, July and August this year, so as to conclude negotiations in August.

The next round of talks will be held in July in Mexico City, said the release, but added that the two sides agreed to continue negotiations via videoconferences on rules of origin and Customs procedures.

At the start of the negotiations, Manuel María Cáceres, Paraguay’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Relations, said the goal of the trade agreement with Mexico is to get market for Paraguayan products, especially those manufactured by small-scale industries, according to abc.com.py.

He mentioned that the Paraguayan apparel sector is expected to benefit from the trade agreement as it would mean opening of Mexican market, which would also result in creation of more jobs in Paraguayan clothing sector.
