Rollback duty hike on used garments: Traders to Pak govt

The Pakistan Second-Hand Clothing Merchants Association (PSCMA) has called on the Government to rollback the 16 percent hike in sales tax on import of second-hand garments.

In its recently released 2013-14 Budget, Pakistan Government has sharply raised the sales tax on import of used garments from 4 percent to 20 percent.

In a statement, General Secretary, PSCMA, Mohammed Usman Farooqui said that in view of the interests of the poor people, who are the main consumers of used clothing, earlier governments have always granted duty and tax relaxations on imports of such clothing, which are mainly imported from the US, Korea, Japan, Australia and Europe.

Condemning the ruling Government for duty hike and withdrawing the benefit of SRO 1125(I) 2011, he claimed that the move would badly hit the poor consumers, as increased taxes are likely to push up the prices of used clothing prices by around 40-50 percent, dawn.com reported.

Mr. Farooqui appealed the Finance Minister to roll back the recent sales tax hike to save the poor people from additional burden of price rise.
