The Government of India is working on a modality for creation of more work spaces to help increase production in the country’s garment sector, Mr. Ajay Shankar, member secretary of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) has said.

Speaking at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event in New Delhi, Mr. Shankar said some of the key elements approached by the Government to boost manufacturing include creation of adequate work spaces in the garment sector so that supply is slightly in excess of demand.

For the purpose, accommodation for workers would also be created as the work centres would be set up in industrial and suburban areas, Mr. Shankar said, Economic Times reported quoting PTI.

Those employed in garment manufacturing units would also be provided proper training in order to produce items that match international standards, he added.

Last week, a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid a roadmap to boost the manufacturing sector, including the textiles and garment sector.

The Government’s strategy for the garment sector is aimed at enhancing employment generation while achieving a greater share in international markets.

In addition, emphasis would be on improving processing and modernization of the weaving segment, Mr. Shankar said.

Earlier this month, Textiles Minister K Sambasiva Rao urged apparel exporters to aim at achieving US$ 20 billion in exports during the ongoing fiscal year 2013-14.

Last fiscal, India’s apparel exports declined by more than five percent year-on-year to US$ 12.9 billion, mainly owing to weak demand from the US and the EU, which together account for over 60 percent of India’s garment exports.
