The sales of apparel grew by 10.5 percent year-on-year to 171.77 billion yen in June 2013, according to the data released by the Japan Department Stores Association, which represents 85 firms that together own 243 stores.

Among apparel, womenswear sales were up by 11.5 percent year-on-year to 111.14 billion yen, while sales of menswear grew by 7.5 percent year-on-year to 37.23 billion yen, during the month.

Children’s wear sales increased by 10.5 percent year-on-year to 10.42 billion yen in June, according to the data.

The association attributed the increase in apparel sales to favourable weather conditions prevailing across Japan during the month under review.

The fact that there was one more holiday in June 2013 compared to June 2012 was also a reason for rise in apparel sales.

Additionally, summer sales began early this year in Japan from the end of June, while they had begun in July last year.
