France remains largest market for Spanish knitwear

France turned out to be the largest destination for Spanish knitwear exports during the first five months of the current year, according to the data released by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.

From January to May 2013, total knitwear exports from Spain amounted to €1.238 billion, registering a rise of 14.5 percent compared to the corresponding period of last year.

Of these, France accounted for more than €200 million, showing an increase of 18.3 percent year-on-year.

Italy and Germany took the second and third places in terms of Spanish knitwear exports, with imports valued €142 million and €74 million, respectively, during the five-month period.

Belgium, Mexico and the Netherlands were the other main destinations for Spanish knitwear exports, with exports clocking €44 million, €37 million, and €26 million, respectively, during the first five months of the current year.

Province-wise, Galicia and Catalonia were the top knitwear exporters from Spain. These two autonomous communities together accounted for 72.4 percent of all knitwear exports from Spain during the period under review.

Galicia exported knitted apparels worth €454.649 million during the period under review, accounting for 36.7 percent of the total Spanish knitwear exports.

Catalonia accounted for 35.7 percent or €442.229 million worth of exports of knitted garments from Spain during the five-month period.

The provinces of Madrid and Aragon contributed 10.1 percent and 9.6 percent respectively, to overall Spanish knitwear exports, during the period under discussion.
