TIB seeks separate ministry for Bangladesh RMG sector

Nov '13
The Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has said that a separate ministry is needed to bring justice to the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector.

Sharing the findings of a research report “RMG Sector: Problems of Good Governance and Way Forward”, with the media, TIB executive director Iftekharuzzaman said there was a lack of coordination among the various government agencies related to the RMG sector.

He sought action by the government to bring to justice those involved in irregularities in the garment sector, as otherwise bigger disasters might take place in future.

He said the clothing sector is now at the crossroads, and a coordinated approach is necessary to counter the threat against the safety of workers.

The TIB research report makes a 25-point recommendation for ensuring workers’ safety and rights, good governance, transparency and accountability in the country’s apparel manufacturing sector.

The recommendations include setting up a separate ministry for the RMG sector, framing long-term plans for the sector, and constituting a directorate under the new ministry for carrying out inspection at factories and implementing compliance measures.

The demand for separate Ministry for Bangladesh’s garment sector is not new, as way back in 2005, the then BGMEA president Mr. Annisul Huq had also sought a separate ministry for Bangladesh RMG industry.

Last year, M Shafiul Islam Mohiddun, another past president of BGMEA had also raised the demand for a separate Ministry of Apparel in the Bangladesh Government that is exclusively dedicated to the country's clothing sector.
