US apparel imports rise 3.78% in Jan-August 2013

The imports of apparel by the US increased by 3.78 percent to $52.729 billion during the first eight months of the current year, compared to imports worth $ 50.809 billion made during the corresponding period of last year, the Major Shippers Report released by the U.S. Department of Commerce showed.
 
Of this, imports of cotton apparel grew by 2.14 percent to $28.732 billion from imports of $28.129 billion made during the same period last year.
 
However, imports of woolen apparel declined by 2.84 percent from $2.151 billion in January-August 2012 to $2.090 billion in the same period this year.
 
The import of clothing made from man-made fibre (MMF) was valued at $20.954 billion, registering a growth of 7.52 percent over imports of $19.489 billion made during the first eight months of last year.
 
On the other hand, the import of garments made from silk and vegetable fibre recorded $952.352 million, showing a drop of 8.24 percent from imports of $ 1.037 billion made last year.
 
In terms of square metre equivalent (SME), the US clothing imports increased by 5.84 percent year-on-year during the eight-month period to 16.514 billion SME. Of this, MMF apparel imports posted a growth of 9.26 percent to register 7.842 billion SME, while cotton apparel imports rose by 3.26 percent to 8.335 billion SME.
 
In 2012, the US imported apparel worth $76.811 billion, recording a marginal decrease over imports valued at $77.659 billion made in 2011. In terms of quantity, 23.684 billion SME of apparel was imported by the US last year, nearly same as the 23.864 billion SME imported in 2011.
