US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member at the US Congress Homeland Security, has appreciated Bangladesh for being a role model for encouraging women working in the readymade garment (RMG) sector, while talking to Bangladesh Ambassador, Mohammad Ziauddin at the Capitol Hill, US, BSS news agency reported.

During the meeting, they discussed various issues including women empowerment and government policies and initiatives to ensure safety and security in Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) sector.

Ziauddin said Bangladesh has been implementing the commitments it made to all partners, including the EU and USA, to ensure the workers’ rights and safety in the garment sector.

The Government of Bangladesh is committed to sustaining the changes to make the garment sector clean, dignified and productive and thus offering a win-win proposition for all, he added.

He said the Government of Bangladesh has adopted liberal and women-friendly policies—National Women Policy-2011 and Family Violence Prevention and Protection Act-2010—to bring women in the mainstream.

RMG is a strategic sector for the Bangladeshi economy, with an estimated 3,500 export factories in operation, providing employment for over 4.2 million workers. (GK)
