Japan's apparel and accessories imports drop in Nov '14

The imports of clothing and accessories by Japan declined by 3.4 per cent year-on-year to 254.001 billion yen (approx US$ 2.11 billion) in November 2014, as per the provisional trade statistics released by the Ministry of Finance. The value of import is based upon the CIF value, and the entry is made in the month within which falls the date of the import permit.
 
During the month, Japan’s garment and accessories imports from Asian countries decreased by 3.9 per cent year-on-year to 238.892 billion yen. Of this, imports from China dropped by 7.6 per cent to 181.398 billion yen, the data showed.
 
Japan imported apparel and accessories worth 11.138 billion yen from the EU, showing an increase of 5.8 per cent year-on-year. The Far Eastern country also imported 1.202 billion yen worth of clothing and accessories from the US, down 10.5 per cent.
 
However, the value of Japan’s import of textile yarn and fabrics increased by 3.1 per cent year-on-year to 81.173 billion yen in November 2014. A bulk of these imports valued at 72.307 billion yen were supplied by the countries in the Asian region, with China alone accounting for 47.310 billion yen, while imports from Asean nations stood at 15.267 billion yen.
 
Japan imported yarn and fabric worth 5.201 billion yen from the EU countries, whereas its imports from the US were valued at 2.177 billion yen, during the month.
 
In fiscal year 2013-14 that ended on March 31, 2014, Japan’s clothing and accessories imports surged by 20.5 per cent year-on-year to 3317 billion yen, while its textile yarn and fabric imports shot up by 22.3 per cent year-on-year to 888.909 billion yen. (RKS)
