Alibaba.com launches reseller platform in India

Alibaba.com, the world’s largest e-commerce company, has launched a reseller platform in India in a bid to muscle its way to a larger share of the country’s e-commerce market, according to media reports.

A reseller is a domestic Indian agent who will connect a small and medium enterprise (SME) or a manufacturer or supplier in India to Alibaba’s customers.

Targeted at exporters and SME manufacturers, Alibaba.com wants to leverage global interest in Indian apparel, jewellery, handicrafts and food and agri products to boost its business.

Part of China’s Alibaba group, Alibaba.com’s presence in India till now was largely in the direct selling segment, where buyers and manufacturers buy and sell products directly, through various Alibaba portals.

Unlike customer-oriented e-commerce companies, which earn through commission on individual sales, Alibaba will earn through listing fee or membership fee from resellers and manufacturers, the reports said. (SH)
