Retail space fails to keep up with demand in H1 2015

Mall clusters in prime retail markets such as South Delhi, Central Mumbai and East Bangalore witnessed an increase in rents as most global brands preferred these prime shopping locations. Malls in the suburban districts of Noida and Gurgaon (NCR), Bangalore and Kolkata, meanwhile, maintained stable rental values during H1 2015.

Global fashion brands are making a beeline for India not only through the traditional route, but also via the e-commerce route. As highlighted by the recent CBRE survey 'How We Like To Shop', 78 per cent of the respondents interviewed shopped online at least once a month - complementing the fact that at least 18 global fashion brands entered the country in H1 2015 via the online mode (utilizing platforms offered by leading fashion e-tailers such as Myntra, Jabong, and Koovs), with brands such as Tom Tailor, RVLT, Girls on Film, DC Shoes and Kas New York being notable entrants.

While global brands were inclined towards entering via online platforms, domestic online players such as Pepperfry and First Cry also set up physical stores to complement their online models, the report said. (SH)
