Bangladesh's junior labour minister Mujibul Haque Chunnu has said that a committee has been formed to take steps to clear the dues of Swan Garments workers, according to an agency report in Bangladesh.

Following the sudden death of its Chinese owner, Ming Yuen Hon, in April, the Swan management shut down two units in Bangladesh without paying dues of workers.

"A nine-member committee has been formed to clear the dues of Swan Garments workers. The committee will find out ways to clear the dues. Moreover, the ministry has a labour welfare fund to help the workers," he said.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a meeting with a workers' body - Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (SKOP) at his ministry.

Swan Garments was one of leading garments companies since it was formed in 1985. It's monthly production was 468,000 pieces of basic style pants, 275,000 pieces of cargo pants, 364,000 casual style and 100,000 pieces of T-shirts and sweatshirts.

Most of the company's products were exported to the Far East Asian markets. It had a turnover of $14 million and employed 2500 workers.(SH)
