Garment exports are expected to reach a total value of US $10.4 billion this year, and many new avenues would pave way for sizeable profits for the sector.
Talking to Fibre2fashion, Benny Soetrisno, Chairman, Indonesian Textile Association (API), explained, "Due to safeguard mechanism applied for Chinese products in the US and EU untill the end of 2008, huge opportunities have emerged for Indonesian garment industry. Besides, EPA (Economic Partnership Agreement) between Indonesia and Japan will encourage our garment export to the country. The main markets for Indonesian garment industry are US at 60 percent, Germany with 8 percent, UK at 6 percent and Japan at 3 percent."
He further beamed, "Indonesian textile exporters have worked hard and have achieved certain stand on the international level. The demand is continuously growing because traders have earned the trust of chief clients from major markets. This positive reputation is spreading and creating new opportunities for garment exporters."
