At a press conference held in Dhaka, the National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF) raised a demand of factory based rationing of food to cope with the hike in food prices.
The Federation also sought the support of other workers' organization to wage a more united and strong protest against petty wages and increasing cost of living.
Nearly 25 lakh workers, with a majority of women, are engaged in about 4,500 garment factories across the country.
Most of these workers are living in deplorable conditions due to extremely low wages which haven't been revised for a long time. Even when the minimum wages were increased last in October 2006 to Tk 1,662, a number of employers failed to implement the new rates.
The sector which contributes nearly 76 percent of Bangladesh's total export earnings, is also the one facing the most distressing phase.
If the situation is allowed to go unattended, it is most likely that workers in garment industry would switch profession and struggle to survive and this would certainly not be a good sign for the sector which is presently looking forward to a flourishing and competitive international trade.
