Hong Kong apparel brands takes over domestic markets

Apparel brands of Hong Kong have gained quite a predominant position and widespread popularity in Thailand, thanks to the colossal consumption of garments in the country.

In 2007, Hong Kong exported clothes worth 503 million Hong Kong dollars to Thailand. Again in the first two months of 2008, the country exported to Thailand clothes worth 88 million Hong Kong dollars, registering an increase of 23 percent than the same period of 2007.

Experts believe that this huge consumption can largely be attributed to middle-class consumers of Thailand whose income allows them to indulge for clothes with personal taste.

Despite such large quantity of exports made to Thailand, Hong Kong brands have not really seized the attention of the consumers. Popular brands like Baleno, Bossini, Crocodile, Giordano, Esprit, Vertical and Horizontal 2000 (G2000), U2 and Toppy's Episode, Jessica, Colour Eighteen are yet to gain recognition among buyers in Thailand.

Presently, many Thai designers have expressed their desire to cooperate with fellow partners from Hong Kong with a strategic aim of entering Chinese and international markets.

However, Thailand also faces the 'grey tide threat' which implies a smuggling of garments from Hong Kong in order to evade customs duties. Needless to say, these clothes are lower in quality compared to the imported batches and this invariably impacts the development of Hong Kong clothing brands in Thailand.

If the channel of transaction is freed from all corrupt practices, Hong Kong apparel brands are sure to flourish in Thai markets.
