The Garment industry of Cambodia which houses some 500 factories and engages about 400,000 people is now faced with the problem of retaining its workers or worse still, find new skilled labors to support expansion in the growing sector.

Some of the factories have also had to shut down due to lack of workers to run manufacturing operations.

One of the major reasons behind this tumultuous situation is the rising inflation which has increased the expenditure of the workers while wages remained stagnant.

While some of the workers gave up their existing jobs for pursuing with their own business, others simply left their jobs.

The New Mingda Garment Co, Ltd factory in Phnom Penh recently underwent expansion but refused to increase its production capacity due to lack of workers. The unit is in need of about 1,000 labors even if they are inexperienced because training could be imparted later on, but it is still unable to find any.

In keeping with these present circumstances, garment and textile producing firms in Cambodia are trying their best to retain their existing skilled labor force by giving them a more attractive pay package.
