In an exclusive interview with Fibre2fashion, Mr Prashant Pokhrel, President of Garment Association of Nepal opined, “Domestic garment sector could benefit if it focuses on other markets. We are very much positive about Indian market in particular as we see great opportunities for our garment exports to the country. We import fabrics and raw material from Malaysia, China, Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan and Thailand and after processing it for use in manufacturing clothes in Nepal we sell it to India. Since the domestic cost of production is 30 percent lower compared to India, we also find a good scale of profit margin.”

Domestic entrepreneurs are still hopeful that if the trade unions reach to an agreement with producers and bring a halt to strikes for at least two years, the apparel industry could bounce back. Besides, setting up of a garment processing zone could also help in overcoming transit transportation costs.
