Jeans leads growth of Shunde garment exports

According to statistics from Foshan Customs, from January to July this year, garment export value of Shunde, Guangdong Province reached US $270 million, a year-on-year increase of 7.3 percent. Of this, July garment export value set a new high for single month exports since last year.

Experts say that when overall situation of garment exports is harsh, significant growth in exports is a great achievement for Shunde. This also offers hope to other regions and stimulates motivation among them.

Although garment exports of the whole province declined nearly 30 percent in the first half; Shunde still held a growing momentum by hitting $50.25 million, a year-on-year rise of 14 percent.

The EU and the US still remain key export markets of Shunde garments, marking a surge of 80 and 30 percent respectively.

Jeans, swimwear, T-shirts and baby clothes were main varieties for exports. Among them, jeans showed the strongest momentum. From January to July, exports of men's and women's jeans from Shunde augmented by 40 and 20 percent, respectively.

According to industry analysis, apparel made of non-knitted fabrics also lifted the garment exports. Knitwear exports from Shunde registered $100 million, down nearly one percent, and non-knitted fabric garments scored $240 million, an increase of 16.9 percent, as against same period of 2007.
