Recently, a spot check was conducted on manufacturers of school and sports uniforms. The result has been extremely shocking. Almost 94 percent of the uniforms were found to be unqualified.

The key problem was the fluorescent brightening agents, which were detected in most of the uniforms.

Insiders inform that these agents are used by the manufacturers to make uniforms appear bright white in colour. These are also most financially convenient option.

However, product safety authorities stress that fluorescent brightening agents could cause severe rashes, skin flare or even ulcerating lesions. Sources report that there are eight kinds of these agents in Taiwanese market and all of them are highly toxic. Thus, its content in uniforms could be seriously harmful for children.

Authorities said that it is absolutely important to keep a check on such issues, especially since it concerns the well-being of children.
