AAFA congratulates Barrack Obama on his victory

On behalf of the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) – the national trade association of the apparel and footwear industry, and their suppliers, we would like to congratulate you on your recent victory.

AAFA has a broad membership including companies that design, manufacture, import and sell apparel and footwear, and the companies that supply them, in a very competitive environment. Our diverse membership includes public multi-national corporations and private, small family-owned businesses.

They represent every stage of the apparel and footwear supply chain – from the yarn spinners and component makers to brands and retail outlets. Today, the U.S. apparel and footwear industry directly employs over a half million U.S. workers and another million plus workers in the retail stores that sell apparel and footwear.

Together, these companies help satisfy Americans' demand for affordably priced clothing and shoes, which in 2008 equaled roughly $370 billion. Recognizing that 96 percent of the world's population lays outside out borders, our members are active in the global market place as well. To sum up, we like to say that our members make everywhere and sell everywhere.

We look forward to working with you in 2009 and beyond to ensure that the economy regains its footing and that our industry, and the hundreds of thousands of U.S. workers we employ, is able to remain competitive. We closely track a number of issues relating to international trade, security, labor, the environment, energy and transportation policy, consumer product safety, and the economy.

As you form your Administration and begin the tough work of governing in a bi-partisan atmosphere, please consider us a resource on these and other issues.
