Textile and apparel sector is considered to be one of the strongest pillars of Sri Lankan economy, earning huge foreign exchange for the country.

Sri Lanka's apparel manufacturing sector is highly developed and has evolved as an export oriented industry for over two decades. Currently, around 800 companies produce a wide range of products including few branded names. Most of them cater to the international market. Today clothing labelled 'Made in Sri Lanka' can be found in major department stores in the USA, UK, Germany and Australia.

Though hit with the global economic crisis, the apparel industry is moving at a steady pace.

In an exclusive interaction with Fibre2fashion.com, Mr Sumedha Jayasinghe, Manager Merchandising, Daya Apparel Export (Pvt) Ltd, gave a clear picture of Daya Apparel, when global recession is affecting industries across the world.

Mr Sumedha Jayasinghe stated, “Since the inception in 1992 with vast experience in the casual wear industry, we have become one of the top 5 garment manufacturers in the country. We invested immensely to fine-tune our manufacturing competence over the years, and now have the capacity to mass produce from the simplest of cut and sew garments to the most technically advanced casual wear.

"From an initial concept to final product, Daya Apparel's state of the art facilities help to create outstanding end products. From production to quality control, technology plays a key function in making Daya Apparels an inspired, cutting-edge organization. Hence we are a flexible company capable of providing a total solution for a competitive price with fast response times to our customers."

He continues, "We have a long term and close relationship with our business partners which have resulted in world renowned brands such as K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Tesco, JC Penney, American Eagle, Woolworth's, Mervyns, MotherCare, and Target placing their trust in us.

"We are able to provide our customers a fast and efficient total solution as all processes of garment manufacturing for instance printing, cutting, sewing, embroidering, washing are carried out in-house within one location using the latest machinery in the industry and computerized software systems to control its execution.

"Due to our unyielding performance through the years our customers have not let the current global situation affect our order placements.”

Discussing survival in today's challenging environment, Mr Sumedha Jayasinghe stressed, “This has been possible because at Daya Apparels we cultivate a culture of autonomy to perform, where our staff inspires, and are inspired by others, to give their best to our customers. Our workforce is a combination of skilled professionals, whose professional development is constantly kept up to date. With a first-rate operational atmosphere, Daya Apparels creates a competitive but productive environment amongst its employees to produce finest results in the industry.”
