The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporter Association (BGMEA), has organised a three days Chittagong Apparel Fabric and Accessories Exposition (CAFAXPO) – 2009, which begins from today.

Speaking on the sidelines of the expo, the first Vice-President of BGMEA, Mr Salam said that the main reason for organizing the expo in the city of Chittagong was to expose the global buyers to the garment exporters from the city.

He added by saying that, since Chittagong was the second biggest garment exporting centre of Bangladesh, it was imperative that an apparel fair be held in the port city. He also divulged export statistics from Bangladesh for the benefit of the media.

He said, the garment industry, had registered a 18 percent fall in exports from the sector, since the unfolding of the crisis, but not withstanding, the country was able to record a growth of 24.76 and 34.57 percent in shipments from the woven and knitted clothing sectors respectively, in the first five months of the current fiscal beginning from July 2009.
