Vietnam is turning out to be one of the largest suppliers of the Kimono suit, the traditional clothing worn and preferred by Japanese women. In the year 2008, Vietnamese textile and garment sector exported kimono suits worth US $ 131 million and was the top exporting product from the sector.
Overall exports from the textile and garment sector fetched $820 million, to generate a growth of 16 percent over the previous year. The kimono suit other than topping the list, also accounted for nearly 15 percent of all exports from the industry. Japan ranks third after the US and EU in terms of export value from the sector.
Other key export products include cotton towels totaling to $44.6 million, rising by 26 percent and fur towels worth $6.5 million, up by 39 percent. 2009 is expected to be a watershed year for the sector, what with dismantling of all trade barriers and in effect providing zero duty status to all Vietnamese exports.
