Apparel shipments grow, textile exports fall in January

According to statistics released by Chinese customs, in the month of January, China imported 78,000 tons of cotton, a reduction of 78,000 tons from the same period last year, leading to a negative growth of 50 percent. As of January, cumulative annual cotton imports in the cotton year 2008-09, stood at 548,000 tons, 404,000 tons less than the same time last year, a drop of 42.4 percent.

According to customs statistics, in the first month of 2009, China's textile and apparel exports reached US $15.23 billion, a year-on-year decline of a marginal 0.7 percent, but down 5.2 percent from the previous month, of which textile exports reached $4.72 billion, a year-on-year decline of 12.4 percent; however clothing exports fetched $10.51 billion, a year-on-year increase of 5.7 percent.

In January 2009, cotton yarn prices fell slightly, but polyester staple fibre prices rebounded. Carded cotton yarn 32s averaged at 16,867 Yuan per ton, down 28 Yuan from the previous month while PSF moved up by 134 Yuan to touch 7089 Yuan per ton or an increase of 1.9 percent.
