Cambodia has a very good apparel manufacturing sector and very low costs of operations, which makes clothing manufactured in Cambodia very cost competitive. But as much as the economic turmoil is troubling other countries, so is it doing so to the clothing sector in Cambodia.
Apparel exports from the country have dropped by half in the current year. Against an average export value of US $200 million per month in 2008, it has plummeted to just around $100 million in February 2009, under the impact of the recessionary trends.
This news is troubling the government since; the garment industry is the single largest foreign exchange earner for the country; nearly 80 percent, apart from providing employment to an estimated 350,000 workers in 2008 and a very important part of the economy.
Meanwhile the labour unions are alleging that nearly 40,000 workers from the garment manufacturing sector have lost their jobs since the crisis unfolded late last year. US is the biggest market for Cambodian apparels and it is going through its worst economic period.
