The local government of Ho Chi Minh City has reported that since opening of factories after the completion of the traditional New Year, more than 1,283 workers have been dismissed at various enterprises in the city.
The dismissal has come about due to closure of ten factories and a few others who after having reduced their operating capacities removed the additional workers. Unofficial sources confirm that the figure is higher.
The main point of note in the pattern of these dismissals is that most of these occurred at foreign invested enterprises, mostly, textile, garment and footwear factories, which have been seriously affected by the global economic crisis.
