During the first month 2009, Vietnam's sportswear exports turnover suffered a strong drop in both value and volume largely due to strong reduction in orders from its traditional key markets, an official source of MOIT said.
The country shipped 1.4 million pieces of sports wear during the period worth US $8.4 million, a decline of 34.7 percent in volume and 41.6 percent in value when compared with the same period of 2008.
Despite the fact that the US continued to remain the largest market for sportswear from the industry, exports to US declined 25.8 percent in volume and 24.9 percent in value to touch 417,000 pieces amounting to $2.1 million.
In the same trend, shipments to the EU fell by 66.3 percent in volume and 59.5 percent in value, totaling to 487,900 pieces and $2.89 million respectively. However, exports to Taiwan recorded growth with 243,600 pieces, worth $1.36 million.
During the period, sportswear manufactured in Vietnam made its presence felt in some new overseas markets, such as Netherlands Antilles, Andorra, Algeria, Monaco, Norway, Antigua and Barbuda, Rwanda, etc.
