The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) applauded the Senate's confirmation of Mayor Ron Kirk to be the next United States Trade Representative (USTR).

“I am pleased that the Senate voted to confirm Ron Kirk to be the U.S. Trade Representative,” said AAFA President and CEO Kevin M. Burke. “Probably one of the most impacting positions in our government, the USTR is responsible for negotiating and enforcing a trade policy that creates economic opportunities for U.S. businesses and manufacturers. I believe Ambassador Kirk is well suited to serve as a pro-growth, pro-trade voice in President Obama's administration.”

“As USTR, Ambassador Kirk has many challenges ahead of him,” Burke said. “Our first challenge is to combat any domestic and international shifts toward isolationism that may close off markets. If we want to see our economy rebound, we must have open markets and greater access for our products around the world. I look forward to working with Ambassador Kirk to turn these challenges into successes for the apparel and footwear industries.”
