He explained: “It closes the credibility gap between what you say is happening and what actually happens.” Communicating this information to the consumer is then key in building their trust.

Addressing a completely different area Nick Abbott, director of Logistics Simulation, demonstrated how his advanced real-time virtual modelling system helped optimise the design of New Look's purpose-built automated warehouse in Stafford. Using sophisticated computer graphics delegates saw how hundreds of kilometres of conveyor belts were put through their paces on a simulator before the final plant was fitted.

The complex simulation programme tested the efficiency of the new warehouse from goods-in to goods-out based on distribution waves. By testing the warehouse design in this 'virtual space' before committing to the final design, manual input at key workstations was significantly reduced and lorry waiting time was reduced from 11+ hours to just 4+ hours.

Finally Philip Warren, principal curator, collections for Leicestershire County Council environment & heritage service, gave delegates a master class in the rise of branded fashion over the past 100 years. In a highly visual and entertaining presentation he showed how the design icons of the early twentieth century, such as Chanel and Dior, revolutionised the commercial identity of elite brands followed by the rise of such signature brands as Jean Muir, Zandra Rhodes and for the high street, Laura Ashley.
