Geographical Indicator for 'Puneri Pagadi'

A Pune based organisation has sought a 'Geographical Indication' (GI) for the famous centuries old, 'Puneri Pagadi', well in time before any other foreign based organisation stakes claim to an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) over the same.

A 'Pagri' is a traditional headgear worn by Indian men folk since centuries and was and is still considered a symbol of pride and honour. The Pune based 'Shri Puneri Pagadi Sangh' has filed an application with the Geographical Indication Registry.

Mr Ganesh Hingmire speaking on behalf of the sangh explained that an early IPR protection will prevent the kind of past experiences the country has faced with regards to Turmeric and Basmati rice, which had to be fought out to prove they originated in India.

The GI for the 'Puneri Pagadi' will also go a long way in preserving the tradition, culture and significant identity of Pune. The GI status is sought under 'Class 25', beneath which are classified clothing, footwear and headgear.

Normally, the GI tag is granted to products that are produced in defined geographical area or region. GI is a constituent and considered a portion of IPR. Recently the famed Pashmina from the state of Jammu and Kashmir was granted a GI.
