Mr Gulihatti Shekar, Minister of Textiles in the State Government of Karnataka speaking at the 'Fabric and Accessories' trade show organised in Bangalore said that the government is planning to give more impetus on training workers in light of the 15 percent job losses in the sector in the state in the last few months.

Under the new textile policy 2008-09, the textile ministry helps in training workers to enhance their skills in various areas like designing, fabric cutting and garment stitching and in the last fiscal, 18,000 people had been trained of which 10,000 got new employment opportunities, said the minister.

He added by saying that the employment potential of a worker increases as and when he receives training, and most of the 500,000 textile and garment workers who lost their jobs were working at the lowest level like helpers etc and if proper training was to be provided to these workers, it would help them find alternative employment.
