According to import data released by the U.S. Customs, in the first four months of 2009, import quantities of the United States continued to decline in most clothing categories, but import volume from China increased significantly and growth rates of imports from China generally expanded.

Among them, 345 category of cotton sweaters formed two-thirds of import market share in the United States, 639 category of women's sweater made from man-made fibers, 645 category of men's sweaters made from man-made fibers, and 652 category of underwear made from man-made fibers accounted for over 30 percent of the imports.

Experts believe that although U.S. retailers do not fully understand and accept price increases requested by China's textile and garment exporters, economic slowdown in the United States might not reduce too much demand for Chinese textiles, as most clothing exported by China are low and mid end products.
