The workers of Treekam Apparel, Lautoka are in a perplexed situation after 60 workers have been laid off by the factory. This move by the factory is believed to be the consequence of the new wages regulation order. This order results in an increase in wages by 20 percent.
Many of the workers, who have been sent home, are the only breadwinners of their family and are waiting for the call from the company, but even after a week there is no positive action from the company in the interest of workers.
Many of the laid-off workers need to look for another job, as they have to fulfill their family's primary needs, which in the wake of ongoing slowdown would not be an easy task.
The workers who are still employed in the factory have fear of loosing their jobs if employers decide to cut costs, to abide by the wage order.
